Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty(1368-1398) Established Zhushan Imperial Porcelain Factory

Zhu Yuanzhang (emperor Hongwu) overthrew the Yuan empire (1271-1368) and founded the Ming Dynasty. He almost inherited Yuan’s “Jiang Ji System” (craftsmen have their own special household registration and inherit the social statues for generations). To meet the demand of offering sacrifices, largess and trade, he set up imperial porcelain factory called Hongwu imperial kiln based on the original Fuliang Porcelain Bureau. Emperor Hongwu exchanged for horses with porcelains for the wars and took advantage of porcelains to expand trade and placate neighboring countries. The large-shaped blue-and-white and underglaze red plates, bowels and jars fired by imperial factory feature simple sublime and boldness without losing graceful bearing, forming the distinctive characteristics of Hongwu imperial kiln’s porcelains.
