Penalty on a Corruptive Superintendent
The Xuande Imperial Kiln was particularly strict in management, particularly in that of leftover or defective wars, so an official was sent by the court to supervise ceramic making. Zhang Shan, the Superintendent of the Imperial porcelain works, “abused his subordinates and took the imperial wares as his own to give away to his associates”. In the second year of Xuande reign (1427 A.D.), in order to rectify discipline and prevent the spread of imperial wares, Zhang was condemned to capital punishment and all leftover and defective wares were smashed and buried at one time. It helped to maintain the imperial authority as well as the fineness of imperial porcelain.
