Porcelain Stationery in the Reign of Kangxi
During the reign of Kangxi, the Imperial Kiln produced a large amount of porcelain stationery including brush pots, brush washing pots, armrests and inkstones, which was closely related to the Emperor’s cultural policy of “worshiping Confucius and advocating Confucianism”. As an ambitious and capable emperor, Kangxi noticed that it was impossible for Manchu to rule the entire China merely with military force. The rule of Qing Empire could not be consolidated without respecting Confucianism and learning from the culture of Han people. Thus, ever since he came to the throne, Kangxi declared Neo-Confucianism as the authority school so as to bring together all well-educated talents of Han nationality. The importance that the government attached on culture evidently facilitated the production of porcelain stationery. Kangxi was oddly concerned about the fineness of porcelain stationery made by the Imperial Kiln. Brush pots were most elaborately made among the stationery wares, which were significant in the history of Qing Dynasty wares.
