Purified Wares: Yongzheng Emperor’s Favorite
Yongzheng Emperor was the fourth son of the Kangxi Emperor, hence the name “Si Ye (the fourth prince)”. This impartial and incorruptible emperor was quite humanistic in terms of art appreciation. He loved purified and elegant wares and pursued the natural and implicit beauty. Yongzheng was directly involved in porcelain manufacturing. As was recorded in the documents of Office of Procurement in the palace of the Qing Dynasty, the Imperial Kiln could only produce wares of any shape at the Emperor’s command. All the produced wares should be presented to and chosen by the Emperor. Yongzheng was fond of porcelain made in the Song Dynasty for its exquisite body, quietly elegant color and graceful charm. Therefore, in the Reign of Yongzheng, the Imperial Kiln made quite a large number of wares modeled on wares of the Song Dynasty. Yongzheng Emperor had a preference to Fencai (Famille Rose), using glass powder as its basic material, for the render effects of its decorative drawings that are similar to traditional Chinese paintings. So Fencai prevailed in the Reign of Yongzheng.
