Li Hongzhang (a minister of the late Qing Dynasty) Raising Fund for Imperial Kiln’s Renaissance

In the third year of Xianfeng Reign (1853), the army of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom attacked Jingdezhen and burnt down the Imperial Kiln in the fifth year of Xianfeng Reign. In the fifth year of Tongzhi Reign (1866), Li Hongzhang, the military governor of the Qing government, raised 130,000 liang (a traditional unit of measure, 1 liang=50g) silver to command Cai Jinqing——a superintendent of Jiujiang Pass to rebuild 72 accommodations on the former site of imperial kiln, so as to revitalize the imperial. All the affairs of supervising the production of imperial porcelain were taken over by JiujiangPass. In the seventh year of Tongzhi Reign (1868), the Imperial Kiln fired porcelain for Emperor Tongzhi’s wedding. In 1911, the Revolution of 1911 overthrew the monarchy, which put an end the whole imperial kiln system. Up to then, Zhushan Imperial Kiln of Jingdezhen existed for six hundred years.
